Chester W. Nimitz High School is a public high school in the Irving Independent School District, Irving, Texas. It was named for U.S. Navy Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. The JROTC Team competes at the state and national level in many categories. Nimitz High School is one of five public high schools in the Irving Independent School District. Nimitz, as of 2006, has an approximate enrollment of 2,315 students in grades 9 - 12, and an ethnic mix of: Native American less than 0.1%, Asian 5.0%, African American 11%, Hispanic 55%, and White 29%. Approximately 52% are considered economically disadvantaged. Nimitz faculty totals approximately 150 with approximately 50% having advanced degrees. Nimitz High School's Academic Decathlon team won the state championship in 2004 and has placed in the top 5 since the school's establishment.

In 2009, the school was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. Currently meeting higher standards earning points of distinction in the 2014-15 school year for rising performance results.

Curriculum

The school year consists of two 18-week semesters. The regular school days consists of eight 46 minute class periods (an exception is 4th period which is longer due to lunches). A variety of extensive instructional programs meet the needs of students with different learning abilities and interests. In addition to regular courses, classes taught at Nimitz also include Pre-AP, Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, gifted and talented, special education, career and technical education, and English as a Second Language.

Subjects in which students may earn Pre-AP credit are English, languages other than English, reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.

Advanced Placement courses include English 3 and 4, Capstone- Seminar and Research, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Biology II, Chemistry II, U.S. Government, Economics, U.S. History, World History, Human Geography, Psychology, Spanish (all), French, German, Music Theory, and Anatomy and Physiology. Every student taking an AP course is required to take the AP exam in May. Dual credit courses are U. S. History, U.S. Government, College Algebra, and English IV.

Nimitz students participate in extracurricular activities and community service. Marching band, athletics, newspaper, yearbook, drill team, FCCLA, UIL Math, UIL Social Studies, choir, orchestra, cheerleading, ballet folklorico, winter guard, debate, theater, student council, Academic Decathlon, Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, and service and special interest clubs are some of the school sponsored activities available to students.

Small Advisories

Nimitz High School is dedicated to helping students make a connection to high school through small learning groups. All students 9-12 participate in an advisory program called VISTAS, Viking Interactive Student-Teacher Advisory Sessions. Through VISTAS, individual attention is given to every student's personal, educational, and career development. Each student has a mentor/advisor that remains with his/her advisory throughout grades 9-12. VISTAS meets once each week for 30 minutes.

As of the 2013-2014 school year, the VISTAS program is no longer active.

Sports

Volleyball, Baseball, Wrestling, Football, Men's Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Cross Country are all current UIL District Champions and/ or have advance for playoff competition.

Other sports are Track, Swimming, Gymnastics, Water Polo, Wrestling, Golf, Basketball, Lacrosse, and Archery.
